What is the oldest assisted reproductive technology ?

The oldest assisted reproductive technology (ART) is in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF was pioneered by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards in the 1970s, resulting in the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first IVF baby, in 1978.Since then, IVF has become a widely used and successful technique for treating infertility.

ICSI was first used in 1992, when Gianpiero Palermo and Andre Van Steirteghem achieved the first successful pregnancy using intracytoplasmic sperm injection in Brussels, Belgium.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has a complex history with contributions from various researchers and scientists over the centuries. While the concept of assisted reproduction dates back to ancient civilizations, the modern era of ART began to take shape in the 20th century. The first documented report of the application of artificial insemination dates back to the late 1770s by a Scottish surgeon named Dr. John Hunter. However, it wasn't until almost a century later that the real beginning of ART as we know it today emerged. In 1943, the first report on human artificial insemination was published by Guttmacher, marking a significant milestone in the development of ART. This publication laid the groundwork for further advancements in assisted reproduction, leading to the development of techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and embryo transfer. While there isn't a single individual credited with the discovery of ART, it is the collective efforts of researchers, scientists, and clinicians over the years that have contributed to its evolution into the sophisticated field it is today. Their dedication and pioneering work have revolutionized the treatment of infertility and provided hope to millions of individuals and couples worldwide.

The development of assisted reproductive technology (ART) was a collaboration between Dr. Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe. Dr. Robert Edwards : A physiologist who developed a way to fertilize eggs in a lab. Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010. Dr. Patrick Steptoe : A gynecologist who developed a new method of egg extraction. The first baby conceived through IVF, Louise Brown, was born on July 25, 1978 at Dr. Kershaw's Cottage Hospital in Oldham, England. Since then, many other ART techniques have been developed, including: Cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos, Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), Microinsemination, and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
