FAQ

How does assisted reproductive technology work ?

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) works by helping couples overcome infertility challenges and conceive. There are several different ART techniques available, each tailored to specific situations. Here's a general overview of how ART works:

1. Hormone Stimulation:

  • Women:

Hormone medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs at once.

This increases the chances of fertilization.

  • Men:

In some cases, medications may be used to improve sperm quality or production.

2. Egg Retrieval:

  • Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called follicular aspiration.

3. Sperm Collection:

  • The male partner provides a semen sample, or donor sperm can be used.

4. Fertilization:

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish, allowing fertilization to occur.

  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): A single sperm is injected directly into an egg, often used when sperm quality is low.

5. Embryo Development:

  • The fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in a laboratory for a few days to allow them to develop.

6. Embryo Transfer:

  • Selected embryos are transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter.

7. Pregnancy and Birth:

  • If an embryo implants in the uterine lining, pregnancy can occur. The pregnancy proceeds normally, with the mother carrying the baby to term.

Additional Techniques:

  • Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT): Eggs and sperm are placed directly into the fallopian tubes, allowing fertilization to occur naturally.

  • Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT): Fertilized eggs (zygotes) are placed directly into the fallopian tubes.

  • Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD): This technique allows for the genetic testing of embryos before transfer, helping to identify and avoid genetic disorders.

Success Rates

The success rates of ART vary depending on several factors, including the couple's age, underlying causes of infertility, and the specific ART technique used. It's important to consult with a fertility specialist for personalized information and guidance.
