The development of assisted reproductive technology (ART) was a collaboration between Dr. Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe.
Dr. Robert Edwards : A physiologist who developed a way to fertilize eggs in a lab. Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010.
Dr. Patrick Steptoe : A gynecologist who developed a new method of egg extraction.
The first baby conceived through IVF, Louise Brown, was born on July 25, 1978 at Dr. Kershaw's Cottage Hospital in Oldham, England.
Since then, many other ART techniques have been developed, including: Cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos, Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), Microinsemination, and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
