In vivo fertilization occurs naturally inside a living organism's body, such as within the reproductive tract of a mammal where sperm fertilizes an egg.
In contrast, in vitro fertilization (IVF) involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside of the body in a laboratory setting, typically followed by the transfer of the resulting embryo(s) into the uterus for implantation and further development.
While in vivo fertilization occurs within the natural environment of the organism, IVF allows for assisted reproduction techniques to be used in cases where natural conception may be challenging.
